Objective
I enjoy designing creative educational history programs for children and adults. I believe it is important that children, adults and families are provided with the opportunity to better understand and appreciate the history and art that defines their community.
Summary of Qualifications
I have developed educational programs for families, adults and children for the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona, FL, including the two historic satellite sites: Old St. Augustine Village in St. Augustine, FL and Gamble Place at Spruce Creek in Port Orange. I also created programs and curriculum for the Black Hills School system in South Dakota, as well as for the schools in Kulpsville and Lansdale, Pennsylvania. I developed the docent-training manual for the Gamble Place at Spruce Creek, Adams Historic House Museum, and supervised docents and volunteers at the Gamble Place, Adams Museum and House and The Morgan Log House. I have successfully written several grants to fund educational history programs and events for the Black Hills School system, as well as grants to provide lectures and programs on local history in Kulpsville, Pennsylvania. In 2002 I created and developed History Out of the Box, which has an interactive, local Florida history website, and I provided outreach programs for home schooled children as well as to local public schools and museums.
Professional Experience
History Out of The Box
Sarasota, FL
I created, developed and incorporated History Out of The Box Inc. to provide students, parents and teachers with an interactive website and curriculum that meets the Sunshine State Standards. These programs encompass math, science and the arts with hands-on activities. The History Out Of The Box website has interactive components that are fun and teach the local and Florida history. Teachers and students can download student packets, curriculum and fill out outreach requests from the website. I have provided outreach programs to home schooled children, classrooms, and museums, as well history and art festivals. I was contracted to run several of the Historic Spanish Point 2005 Summer Camps. http://www.historyoutofthebox.com
Morgan Log House
Kulpsville, PA
At the Morgan Log House I was responsible for educational programs for both adults and children. I developed a hands-on, project-based curriculum for the local school system and organized a historic fair for the local elementary schools. As the volunteer coordinator, I trained the volunteers, arranged educational programs for the historic interpreters, and implemented a junior volunteer program for children ten years old and up.
Adams Museum
Deadwood, SD
As the Educator for the Adams Museum I created ties with the teachers and administrators in the Black Hills school system. I incorporated a traveling trunk for outreach programs to the schools and developed programs that complement teaching lessons by utilizing the museum’s exhibits as an extended classroom. I designed the Discovery Center for the Historic Adams House Museum, including the 19th century-based projects and activities. I worked with the local high school students to produce a video on the history of the Homestake Gold Mine, which closed permanently in 2001. The video included oral histories, historic photographs, and voice-overs. The final product was made available at the public and school libraries, as well as the museum and city archives.
